What to expect with a new roof in Darwin Minnesota

The first thing you will notice is that your yard will look like a construction site. We bring in a dumpster, and park it right in the middle of your yard, so our men can toss the old shingles right in without wasting much time. The next thing you will probably notice about your new roof in Darwin is that not all the shingles actually make it into the dumpster. This is normal, and won’t stay that way- so don’t be too concerned. Our men are all very familiar with being careful not to damage  plants and shrubs, so you can be assured that even though they sometimes miss the dumpster, they won’t land directly on plants and gardens. A typical roof replacement will produce approximately 5,000 to 10,000 pounds of trash, but it will only be around for a few days and then the dumpster will be gone forever.

This process of tearing off the old roof is also very noisy, but not as noisy as installing a new one. We usually place 2 to 5 men up there to keep the job moving along as fast as possible just in case we run into the risk of bad weather. On average, a new roof will install in 1 to 3 days, depending on the size of course. The constant hammering will begin to wear thin by 3:00pm, so plan on eating out that night, you will be glad you did. These vibrations can also cause some of the pictures in your house to move. If any of them are hanging precariously, or resting loosely on something, it would be a good idea to gather them up, or lay them flat to avoid the unthinkable.

We always do everything we can to make a new roof installation as quick,  painless, and sun as smoothly as possible. All you have to do is pick out the color, and we can do the rest. 952-442-1762

Choosing the Right Roofing Materials for your St Paul Minnesota Home

Roofing manufactures and installers have developed great advances in the quality of materials, styles, colors, textures and even the use of recycled materials in the production of their products. Fifty years ago, certain styles of roof coverings could distinguish the location of a home: slate or wood shakes were more common in the Eastern regions, while clay tile was more popular in the South and Western areas of the country, and metal roofs were primarily reserved for commercial structures or out buildings on a farm. That is all changing with greener products available and new technology emerging every year, roofing has become somewhat of a science.

It used to be true that a slate roof was a major investment, the cost being several times more than standard asphalt shingles, but slate had a life expectancy of twice maybe three times as long as shingles, so in the end the investment paid for itself. Many homeowners appreciated the craftsmanship of wood shingles, but feared the potential fire hazard they posed, as well as the cost of purchase and installation. But advancements have been made in the manufacturing of metal roofs, and now wood shake, slate, and clay tile are just a few of the styles of metal roofs that can be found on any home, anywhere within the country.

It is not uncommon that the average homeowner devotes very little thought to the roof over their head. After all, it is only seen from the outside and does not require a great deal of attention or upkeep once installed. A new, properly installed roofing system, put together with quality materials can last up to 30 years. So unless there is a leak, storm damage, or hail, the average homeowner may not give their roof a second thought. Plus with so many excellent choices to choose from it can be confusing to choose what the best style is for you, and the location of your home. Speak with one of our informed professionals, and we will be able to help you sift through all the advantages and disadvantage, so that you will be able to make the right decision for you. We are only a phone call away, we are Iron River Construction. 952-442-1762

Don’t Wait Until Your Roof Leaks to Get A New One in Annandale MN

Roofing materials are like car tires. Eventually, they will wear down and then fail to perform when you need them most. If you postpone replacing your roofing shingles, and get hit with an Annandale, MN severe weather storm, you will then not only have a new roof to pay for, but interior damage, as well. It is important to remember that insurance will not cover normal wear and tear. Homeowners are expected to keep up with routine maintenance, both before it fails; and after a new one is installed.

Maintenance is required for most new roof installs in order to keep the warranty in effect. The good news is that yearly roofing inspections are free with Iron River, so you never have to worry about being compliant. As long as you are made aware of any defects or damage early on, either your insurance or your warranty will most likely cover it.

You will know that it is time to replace or repair your roof when you see things like;

  1. Worn valleys
  2. Water stains inside the house
  3. Missing, curling or damaged shingles
  4. Shingles that are 15 to 20 years old
  5. Lots of granules in the gutters, to the point that they impede water flow.

While some granule loss is acceptable, especially from a new roof, older roofing should not still be shedding these. If they are, chances are you are ready for a new roof. If you would like to know for sure what is going on up there, now is a good time to take a look. Iron River Construction offers free roofing inspections, and taking care of this right before winter sets in is a good time to do it. Give us a call and let’s resolve any  issues once and for all. Knowledge is the first step towards recovery.  952-442-1762

Caveat Emptor: Storm Repair in Carver, MN

Don’t you get tired of products making claims they don’t live up to? I recently moved from the city to the country and left my iron in storage, thinking “I’m not that big on ironing anyway.” But I soon found that I occasionally need to remove wrinkles from my clothes, especially if meeting with people who care about that sort of thing.

Now I have no place nearby to shop for practical items. You might suggest I do my shopping via internet, but I reserve that strictly for books and impulse items, like this John F. Kennedy Vintage Plastic Pencil Sharpener. So I drove the ten miles or so to the next little town and hit the dollar store, where everything is $1. (I love hearing people ask the clerk, “How much is this?” “One dollar.” “How much is this?” “One dollar.”)

To my delight, I found a spray bottle of Wrinkle Releaser. Of course I bought it and went home to spray it on everything in my closet. I wasn’t expecting magic, but was more or less befuddled by the illustrations on the back, which seem to indicate that after spraying product, you should pinch your shirt (Step 2). Then, bunch and knead it so that the belly area appears to be stuffed with a pillow (Step 3). Finally, you hang it up to dry (Step 4). The result of this “substitute iron” was less than dazzling. A handy little tip at the end says, “Spray while ironing for a pressed look.” In other words, for an ironed look, iron it.

People say, “You get what you pay for,” but I’m usually surprised if I even get that. Caveat emptor. Whatever, it’s only a dollar. An entire national chain is built on the expendability of one single dollar rather than the reputability of their product. As long as we all agree that it’s OK, it probably is. But when it comes to bigger expenses, like home repairs, we expect more.

That’s why when you’re shopping for storm repair, it’s vitally important to really check out the company and make sure they have a history of delivering on their promises. When weather strikes, so do unscrupulous fly-by-night contractors who swoop in for your down payment and swoop out without doing the work, leaving you even more vulnerable than you were before.

Instead of taking your chances, go with a trusted local company like Iron River Construction. We have been operating here in Minnesota for 15 years, are licensed, bonded, insured, and members of the Better Business Bureau. Contact us now for your free, no-obligation inspection, or request a quote online. There is just no substitute for a job done right!

Why There are No Hobbits in Carver MN Roofing Projects

Whatever its age, square footage or design, the roof forms the crux of your shelter, sheds rain and snow, shades from the sun, and otherwise acts as a buffer between you and the elements. Throughout architectural history, the consistent elements in the design of a roof are the material, the construction, and the durability. Up until recently, the available natural resources determined the material. In some parts of the world, roofing materials could consist of banana leaves, seagrass, mud, glass, aluminum sheeting or precast concrete.

Until as late as the 19th century, many homes in the United Kingdom had thatch or sod roofs. In the early American colonies, thatched roofs were also common. They eventually fell out of favor in more populated areas because of the obvious danger of fire (we all recall what happened to the little pig who built his house of straw don’t we?), as well as the maintenance required.

Perhaps like “pre-rusticated” designer jeans, in recent years thatched roofs have become a sign of wealth and status in some European countries. In the U.S., however, we have a little thing called the Homeowners Association to put the kibosh on such frivolities. While everyone loves a Hobbit on the big screen, when the tell-tale thatched roof appears next door in your cul-de-sac, property values plummet, and there goes the neighborhood.

Thank goodness, we now have many durable, low-maintenance, modern materials to choose from. The durability of a roof is a matter of concern because the roof is often the least accessible part of a building for purposes of repair, while its damage or destruction can have serious effects. Thus, a weather-tight roof is fundamental in the conservation of your home.

Speaking of durability, at Iron River Construction, we offer a 20-year guarantee on our material and labor, and some of our roofing suppliers provide a 50-year or lifetime warranty on their product. If you are ready for a roof replacement, or have recently been it by a storm, notice curling, and missing or discolored shingles and just need some routine maintenance, call us for your free, no-obligation inspection, or request a quote online today.

An Open Letter to Eden Prairie from MN Storm Repair Specialists

Dear Eden Prairie,

You made it. You have been ranked as one of the The Best Small City to Live in the Entire United States by Money magazine. Perhaps the word “ranked” doesn’t convey a tone that harmonizes with your personality. It might be better to say that you have ascended to the top like good Jersey cream or a lone lofty cloud haloing a peak.

Eden. Prairie.

Eden: a lost garden paradise to two unfallen creatures. Prairie: a vision of a golden America, an unconquered West stretching somewhere beyond Ol’ Man River.

Indeed, the local literature and placenames denote something pastoral or even ethereal about this town. You are home to Flying Cloud Airport, Sunbonnet Day, Rainbow Farms, and a Staring Lake. Your notable people include beauty queens, senators’ wives, actresses, and Vikings. By all public accounts you are fiscally and physically flourishing.

Looks like the universe has been pretty good to this heavenly hamlet, yet, the rain falls on the just and the unjust, and sometimes that precipitation comes in the form of hail. When that happens, we say “let it roll off your back like water from a duck,” because you know that help is just a phone call or an email away. Dial off into the ether, or push a button that says “send” and an Iron River storm damage repair expert will appear at your house, townhome or condo to make sure that no further harm comes to your home as a result of storms past.

If your home has been hit by hail or other wind-borne debris, an immediate damage assessment is absolutely imperative to avoid further destruction from unseen leakage. The integrity of your roof and siding will be assessed and restored quickly by Iron River’s own storm repair professionals.

Even the best needs an improvement once in a while, and we are here for you, Eden Prairie. Iron River Construction has been here in Minnesota for 15 years, and we have a long list of happy local customers. As you can see from our references, we are reliable, professional, timely, and will work with your insurance . We specialize in storm repair, as well as siding, windows, and remodeling, so please contact us for a free, no obligation assessment.

Best Wishes from Your Trusted Local Storm Repair,

Roads Buckle Under Heat, But We Don’t, Excelsior!

We are feeling the heat now, aren’t we, Excelsior MN? Interstate 94 in Minneapolis buckled under intense heat and humidity yesterday, demonstrating the cumulative power that extremes of heat and cold can have on even the most durable man-made structures. While sensible people take steps to stay cool right now—swimming, sitting indoors with the shades drawn and AC cranked, drinking electrolytes or some other tonic—we at Iron River are looking ahead to that long winter and making sure that Minnesotans are covered, all year round. Strike while the iron is hot, so to speak, and see that your roof is prepared for next winter.

Inspect your roof from a safe vantage point, and if necessary, use binoculars. Look for cracking, curling, or missing shingles. If your roof is made of asphalt shingles, look for areas that seem to lack granular covering. You should also scrutinize your roof from the inside. If you have an attic, use a flashlight to look for water stains, which would indicate a leak in the roof. You may also call one of our licensed, bonded, and insured professionals to inspect it for you.

Considering that a roof constitutes 40% of a home’s exterior visibility, it has a big effect on the overall appearance of your home. Are you pleased with the look and style of your roof? As you plan your roof replacement, you might want to update its style and increase the value of your home, and our experts will bring you samples and swatches to see what works with your taste, as well as your home and its particular architecture.

Unlike Interstate 94, roofs constructed by Iron River have a minimum 20-year guarantee. Some of our roofing manufacturers even provide a 50 year warranty because roofing materials today are more advanced and durable than ever before. For example, one of many product lines we offer, Eco-shake, has a Class A fire rating, Class 4 impact rating, is freeze-thaw resistant, passes 110 mph wind-driven rain testing, is maintenance free and color-solid throughout (no chipping, peeling, scratching), UV protected, and constructed of 100% recycled material to boot.

If “green” is not your thing, we have a wide array of natural and traditional roofing materials as well from top-quality makers such as CertainTeed, Owens Corning, GAF, and Elk. Contact Iron River, or submit a quote request today!

A Top Roofing Contractor Serving St Paul

This passing winter and spring has left some considerable storm damage for many Minnesotans, but many of us are not even aware of it. Since few of us ever actually go up on our roofs, how would we know? The wind, snow and ice can all add up to missing shingles, warped flashing, and separated siding that make it very convenient for the animals in spring to make their home.

Most people don’t go on the roof because they don’t know what’s up there, and they don’t want to know. This is a good thing for us, since Iron River Roofing Contractors specializes in roofing repairs and replacements in the St. Paul Metro area, we are more than happy to go up there for free and take a look around.

We understand roofing, and how this business works. If there is any damage, your property insurance will cover it, so there doesn’t have to be any out of pocket money from the owner at all. We know that when snow and ice get between building materials and freeze, they expand and separate. Once in this position, they will hold that shape and stay there throughout the next year.

As this cycle continues, this opening will get larger and larger, leaving a nice warm welcome to a host of little critters that will be glad to set up a nest inside your home. The insurance companies know this too, that is why they are glad to pay for a little preventative work rather than wait until it becomes a serious issue.

Having been in business over 10 years, we understand the many things that can happen to a propery’s roofing. Our field leaders know what to look for, and will go the extra mile to ensure that your property is secure on every detail. By replacing warped and damaged materials, caulking, securing whatever might need it; this preventative maintenance will go a long way towards keeping your home intact. Give us a call to set up your free home inspection and protect your home on every level. We are happy to help with any and all questions…952-442-1762
