James Hardie Zone Siding for Your Minnesota Home

One of the best things about James Hardie siding is that they have engineered their products to be suitable for each specific zone around the country. Based on where you live, they have the perfect product for your home. Their products are made from concrete, and can withstand any range of temperatures, and they are tailor made to work best in your regional climate.

Installing siding for your home is a big consideration, as you will be living with it for 20 years or more. It is important that you understand what you are installing, and why, or it may not last as long as you prefer. Vinyl siding is always cost effective, but it tends to come apart easily, and will fade over the years. A James Hardie cement board has the color woven throughout the product, so it won’t fade or show dings quite as much. Because its cement board, it will also stand up to flying debris in the air. What would naturally dent the average home siding won’t even make a dent on cement board. Cement boards are also more resistant to wind, when installed properly. They are an engineered siding, meaning that they are designed to fit together tightly, so no wind and driving rain can get behind them. If by some small chance some water does seep in, the drainage system will make sure that it has an escape, so you won’t be stuck with any standing water behind the wall. You won’t have to be concerned about any high wind and driving rain storms the next time they come along.

It is our opinion that James Hardie cement board siding is the best siding product on the market, able to withstand the weather better than any other siding, and should be the first consideration when a homeowner is looking for new siding. If there were something better, Iron River Construction would be offering it. So if you are ready to take the step up to premium siding, give us a call and let us wrap your home in the most durable siding product there is. 952-442-1762

The Best Qualities in a St Paul Siding Contractor

There are not many, but there are some in our area that have had bad experiences with a local St Paul roofing and siding contractor, and with any luck they will learn from their mistakes.  Hiring someone because they had the cheapest price is rarely the best way to go. You will eventually feel this maneuver sooner or later, but always long after the contractor has left your project.

The most important things to watch out for are;

  1. Are they legally licensed and insured to work on your home?
  2. Have they been in business for at least 5 years?
  3. Can they provide at least 3 references?
  4. Obtain at least 3 written estimates before you decide on one in particular.
  5. Take a look at how they present themselves and their approach to discussing your particular needs and concerns.

If you are not satisfied with each one of the answers to these questions, then you should probably not go with this contractor. Without a license, contractors can turn around and sue you if they, or anyone they bring onsite, gets hurt. Even though it sounds frivolous, it happens every now and then, and the hassle factor alone is simply not worth using an unlicensed contractor in any field.

If they have not been in business for at least 5 years, then you will be running the risk of them not being completely competent at their job. While some will say “I have been roofing since I was 8 years old…” their responsibility on the job may not have been much more than the errand boy.

Providing references is probably the best way to make a determination about a company. Without a track record of their successes, how can you expect anything from them without knowing this first? If they have been in business for any length of time, they will certainly have a few happy customers that are glad to share their experiences.

Make sure you are comparing apples to apples; and oranges to oranges when going over your contracts. There are some who will nickel and dime you to death; and end up charging you more in the long run than if you had simply gone with another slightly higher bid. This is a common problem with contractors. They will come back to the homeowner after the job has started and tell of some ‘unforeseen circumstance’ that is now going to cost a few hundred; or even thousand dollars more. Make sure there is a provision that caps your costs somewhere in the contract.

Lastly, take a good look at how they maintain their materials. Their tools are their livelihood, and should be treated with respect. If they don’t respect their tools; chances are they will not respect the job either. Be smart, take notice, and make sure you call Iron River Construction when you are ready to replace your St. Paul siding. We have been there and done that including many excellent references… you can be sure you will get the best of everything, every time we come over.  952-442-1762

James Hardie Siding in Waconia

For those who are interested in installing new siding for their home, and don’t really know where to begin, consider James Hardie siding first. This siding is very cost effective, giving you far more than what you are paying for, as compared to other siding products in the market.

While no home is ‘fire-proof’ with James Hardie you can at least be ‘fire-resistant’. This is a huge difference. Stopping a fire takes many efforts from many different sources. Water is the first line of defense, but having non- combustible, or low-combustible materials is the next largest factor. With James Hardie, you will be protected with this extra measure of technology.

This siding is a fiber-cement composite that will resist high winds and impact better than most sidings, too. Aluminum and vinyl will dent and bend, but James Hardie will resist impact and bounce off most of the common debris that are seen during  high wind forces, and even tornados.

Cement fiber board will also not expand and contract like other types of siding. For this reason, our siding will hold up longer, as much as 3 or 4 times as long, than the typical wood siding, and without all the maintenance, either. The color is fused within the entire board, so it will never fade or peel like tradition sidings will. Wood siding will warp; crack; be subject to infestation, and sooner or later it will need to be scraped and painted again, every few years to be exact. Both paint and stain are both labor intensive, but you won’t have this issue with cement fiberboard. So if you are ready to make this decision, come to those who install siding for a living, we know what’s out there, and what will work best for you. At Iron River, we take pride in our work, and will give you the best advice concerning what is best for your home. 952-442-1762

Choosing the Right Roofing Materials for your St Paul Minnesota Home

Roofing manufactures and installers have developed great advances in the quality of materials, styles, colors, textures and even the use of recycled materials in the production of their products. Fifty years ago, certain styles of roof coverings could distinguish the location of a home: slate or wood shakes were more common in the Eastern regions, while clay tile was more popular in the South and Western areas of the country, and metal roofs were primarily reserved for commercial structures or out buildings on a farm. That is all changing with greener products available and new technology emerging every year, roofing has become somewhat of a science.

It used to be true that a slate roof was a major investment, the cost being several times more than standard asphalt shingles, but slate had a life expectancy of twice maybe three times as long as shingles, so in the end the investment paid for itself. Many homeowners appreciated the craftsmanship of wood shingles, but feared the potential fire hazard they posed, as well as the cost of purchase and installation. But advancements have been made in the manufacturing of metal roofs, and now wood shake, slate, and clay tile are just a few of the styles of metal roofs that can be found on any home, anywhere within the country.

It is not uncommon that the average homeowner devotes very little thought to the roof over their head. After all, it is only seen from the outside and does not require a great deal of attention or upkeep once installed. A new, properly installed roofing system, put together with quality materials can last up to 30 years. So unless there is a leak, storm damage, or hail, the average homeowner may not give their roof a second thought. Plus with so many excellent choices to choose from it can be confusing to choose what the best style is for you, and the location of your home. Speak with one of our informed professionals, and we will be able to help you sift through all the advantages and disadvantage, so that you will be able to make the right decision for you. We are only a phone call away, we are Iron River Construction. 952-442-1762

Fiber-Cement Siding: the Smart Choice in Minnetonka

For Minnesotans, our primary concern for your home is its ability to withstand freezing temperatures and extreme weather. However, with the siding options available today, functionality doesn’t have to overshadow a home’s aesthetic appeal. With a James Hardie siding system, beauty and function work in perfect congruency with one another.

In light of the increasing frequency of tornadoes and the intense damage they leave in their wake, as Minnesota and Missouri saw on May 22 this year, fiber-cement board, which can withstand wind speeds up to 150 miles per hour, offers a very attractive and protective barrier between your home and the elements. Fiber-cement siding, like that offered by James Hardie, has been specified by hurricane-zone building codes for building homes in hurricane-, tornado-, and wildfire-prone areas “due to its impact resistance against hail and windblown debris,” according to FEMA.

Because fiber cement siding is composed primarily of cement, it combines many of the benefits and safety features of masonry with the look of wood. It will not ignite with exposure to flame or fuel a fire. Because it has qualities like that of stone, brick, and mortar, it is not attractive to pests. Its unique construction also makes it breathable, so it resists moisture and molds.

In addition to the added safety and protection this siding offers, it is maintenance-free. James Hardie features ColorPlus technology, “a unified composition of advanced fiber-cement and baked-on pigment” that is guaranteed for 15 years not to fade, chip, or peel. The color palette was designed with regional preferences in mind, so that you can choose a color that fits your locale, if you so choose. If you are uncertain what color you’d like for your home, they have designed a fun interactive quiz to help you find a color that matches your “personality.” (I can’t guarantee the accuracy of this quiz, however—it kept matching me with “taupe” when I like to think of myself as more of a tangerine…)

When you are ready to replace your siding, the licensed, bonded and insured professionals at Iron River will do it right, will do it to your specifications, and will get it done quickly. Contact us today to find out what Iron River Construction can do for you and your home.

Hutchinson, MN Siding Contractors

If you are in the market for new siding for your home, there is a plethora of siding material to choose from. Cedar siding is one choice that has its own distinctive look that works well with most architecture. It is important to understand the positives and the negatives associated with installation of cedar. Cedar is a form of wood, but more elegant than wood. It definitely lends warmth and style to the overall appeal of any home. As compared to wood, cedar is long lasting and more durable, especially if it was harvested from the western United States. This region gets some harsh winds and rain, making the trees denser and stronger because they had to stand up to high winds and rain. Cedar is naturally termite resistant but you may have to stain it annually, so that its elegance is maintained. This will also help retard any fungus or mold.

Cedar siding falls under the category of soft woods, but it is definitely durable as compared to other soft woods. It is a great choice when it comes to sidings as it suits every climatic condition. It will also prevent the inside heat from escaping from your home during the winter season so that it will remain warm and cozy during the long, winter nights. Cedar is particularly nice in a rustic
environment, making it blend with the trees around it. The natural fragrance of cedar is also very soothing.

Cedar needs little maintenance; basically it should be treated at least once a year with a sealer so that it maintains its luster and quality. This can be done by the homeowner, or any local painter. This will enhance the overall beauty of wood, and help make is last longer, too.

If you are considering new siding for your home, call us at Iron River Construction. We have experience in all kinds of siding, and when you are ready, we can help you find the right siding materials for your home . 952-442-1762

A Top Roofing Contractor Serving St Paul

This passing winter and spring has left some considerable storm damage for many Minnesotans, but many of us are not even aware of it. Since few of us ever actually go up on our roofs, how would we know? The wind, snow and ice can all add up to missing shingles, warped flashing, and separated siding that make it very convenient for the animals in spring to make their home.

Most people don’t go on the roof because they don’t know what’s up there, and they don’t want to know. This is a good thing for us, since Iron River Roofing Contractors specializes in roofing repairs and replacements in the St. Paul Metro area, we are more than happy to go up there for free and take a look around.

We understand roofing, and how this business works. If there is any damage, your property insurance will cover it, so there doesn’t have to be any out of pocket money from the owner at all. We know that when snow and ice get between building materials and freeze, they expand and separate. Once in this position, they will hold that shape and stay there throughout the next year.

As this cycle continues, this opening will get larger and larger, leaving a nice warm welcome to a host of little critters that will be glad to set up a nest inside your home. The insurance companies know this too, that is why they are glad to pay for a little preventative work rather than wait until it becomes a serious issue.

Having been in business over 10 years, we understand the many things that can happen to a propery’s roofing. Our field leaders know what to look for, and will go the extra mile to ensure that your property is secure on every detail. The St Paul Minnesota Siding Business Is Growing this Time of Year

There is a web site titled The Siding Web™ that monitors window and siding data, and has been for several years. They keep track of how many requests are made to purchase products, requests for estimates, what the going rates are in certain geographic areas. They basically give the industry an insight into what the market is doing and where. It is a web page of links- 1 giant link actually.

Recently, they have gotten some more attention because they have declared that the winter recession appears to be moving behind us. According to the Siding Web, there is a marked increase in siding estimates and siding materials being bought this past April 2011, something that is typically seen in January, not this late in the year.

The general belief is that the slow start this year was due to the overall economy of the country, but others are saying the weather also played a large role. Chances are it’s both.  Even when the economy has been slow, and new construction builders slow down, remodelers will pick up, so there has always been a sort of even trade between the two. However, this last slump proved to be outside of the norm.

Nevertheless, even though 2011 has proven to be off to a slow start, it is believed that MN siding installs will progress at a steady rate, and homeowners will continue to give their home the  care it needs to preserve its appearance.

One good way to keep up with maintenance is to contact Iron River Construction, because we can repair your siding in St. Paul, without having to replace it altogether. Sometimes, we all just have to do what we have to do until things turn around. Using an experienced roofing and siding contractor in Minneapolis is one way to make the most of the current situation. 952-442-1762
