Two More Mistakes Made When Purchasing a New Roof

1. Getting a discount for signing the contract “tonight” or other high-pressure sales tactics.

This forces the homeowner to make a quick decision, so as not to miss the “unbeatable price.” No matter how good the roofing install or repair price may seem, do not buy a roof from a company that asks you to make a decision before you are ready. There are rare times such as after a natural disaster when roofing companies get backed up, but they should simply inform you of what they can, and leave the decision to start up to you. Any decent contracting company will at least tarp your home, and protect it until they can get back to it in a more timely manner; or they will leave 1 or 2 men onsite to secure it from further damage.

Any reputable company will have relationships and access to quality products for 2 or more weeks from the time they provide you with a quote. There is an outside chance that a contractor may have a “sudden” opening in their work schedule and offer an incentive to keep their crews working, however the more reputable companies do not have a significant amount of discount in their cost. If they offer more than a 10% discount, one might question their margins in the first place. Do your homework, talk to references, and only sign when you are comfortable that you’ve made the right choice.

2. Signing the deal because you like the sales person (or not signing it because you don’t).

Although you may feel a certain comfort level with a sales person, this should not be your sole reason for making a purchase. A truly good sales person will know their products and the overall installation process very well, which should give you a level of confidence. However, the sales person is not the one who will be doing the roof repair or installation. Find out who will, and their experience. Ask for references and ask to see examples of similar installations. Be wary of a sales person who cannot provide real references from CURRENT customers.

When we had damage to our home with this last hail storm, we did the right thing and contacted our insurance company right away. They sent out an adjuster within days to review the damage. After the adjustment was done I found it hard to believe my roof was the only one in the neighborhood that the hail seem to miss. I will tell you this, NEVER go into this type of adjustment without someone like Iron River Construction on your side. Paul came to my home, re-viewed the damage, and found lots the adjuster missed. We were able to get the insurance company back out to re-review. I not only got my roof repaired but several other items missed by the first adjuster. Without Paul and Iron River my home and I would have suffered from damage that was done by the storm for years to come.

We decided to make some changes with the siding since it needed to be replaced on the front of our home and I have to say the entire Iron River staff was very helpful and patient to help us get the look we wanted. Once the work started Melissa kept us informed on the progress and answered any questions we had- this was great in making us feel very comfortable that the work was being done with quality and care- we were very pleased.TJ and the staff that came to our home worked hard and did the work on schedule. TJ would meet with me each morning to insure the work was done how we wanted and of course I’m not a contractor so they made several suggestions that were very helpful to make sure I was making sound construction decisions. As for the Sub Contractors they were on time and did great work as well, coming to our home and meeting with us before doing the work to make sure it was what we wanted.

Winter in June

We had Tracy out early June last year and had her look at our roof for hail damage from the previous year. She found damage to our roof and helped us contact our insurance company. They came out and met with Tracy, agreed there was damage, and approved a new roof for our home. Within a week her crew was out and roofed our home and outbuilding and we were totally satisfied.
Two weeks after completion we had the misfortune of having a hail storm that was like no other. It started out as baseball sized hail and piled up enough hail to ride snowmobiles on-up to six inches deep in places. The hail lasted two days in the yard despite being 80 degrees. There was not a leaf left on a tree, and needless to say the damage was extensive.
I called Tracy 10 minutes after the storm, and she arranged for tarps to protect our home as we had broken windows and extensive damage literally shredding the vinyl siding. And so started our summer of construction.
We contacted our insurance agent and Tracy showed up to consult. The insurance company stated they had never seen such extensive damage from hail. It was the first of many visits. They gave us an initial estimate and Tracy and crew got started on repairs. There were many things left off the estimate, and Iron River continually fought on our behalf to have our home restored to original condition.
Most of our summer revolved around getting our home back in shape. The people at Iron River were always in contact and on top of every aspect. I even got calls from Tracy when she was on vacation.
We are totally satisfied with all things Iron River has helped with and have recommended her to many neighbors and friends who are also satisfied.

On May 31st, 2008, a horrible hailstorm came through my neighborhood. I walked from room to room in my home, hoping not to find the elements had come in through a broken window. I watched as the hail piled up on my front steps and gardens, at the same time thinking “My God, is it ever going to end? It has to be coming right through the house!” The sound was incredible. Once the air cleared, I, like all my neighbors, went out to assess the damage. I was lucky, only one broken window. But it looked as though someone had shot golf balls at my house from a cannon.
I, of course, called my insurance agent. They came out and did an assessment and sent me a check. I did a little research online and found Iron River Construction. I made the call, and both Tracy and Paul were at my house that day. They both did some inspecting and we talked over what they thought was needed for repairs. Paul met with my insurance adjuster again and was able to get more repairs covered that had been missed on the original assessment. Paul and I worked out materials, colors and repair schedules. Workers showed up when they were supposed to, did good work and were tidy about it. I did have a touch up or two, and again Paul and Melissa were all over getting things done in a timely fashion.
I am very pleased with the outcome of the work done by Iron River on my house. The staff was always fast, fun and friendly each time we met. I have and will continue to recommend Iron River for any contractor work needed to everyone I know.
