Eliminating MN Siding Repairs and Maintenance

Are you tired of your old aluminum siding? Have you had enough of scraping and repainting your wood siding every few years? Are you ready to consider an energy-efficient home siding solution? Then take a look at James Hardie fiber cement board siding. The popularity of this product has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, and fiber cement board siding is fast becoming the standard in the industry.

The James Hardie Company is the leading manufacturer of this product.  Hardie was the first company to introduce fiber cement board siding, and they have developed a product line that is designed to fit local climates. They have divided the country up into regional zones, and engineered their siding to be best suited to that environment.  This means the siding is less likely to shift or react with the weather, so no more periodic repairs or re-caulking.  Because they are made from cement, the siding boards are extremely durable and will withstand some of the harshest environments. In the South, James Hardie siding has been known to stand up to hurricane-type winds with flying debris; in the North it will hold up against the most bitter cold. Because it is engineered siding, James Hardie cement boards are made to fit together tightly, with caps and seals that will insulate your home as much as any home can be insulated. It’s so durable that in many cases it can be expected to outlast the homeowner.

You might think that James Hardie siding is more expensive than the other options available, but it is truly cost efficient. Even though vinyl siding costs less at first, it doesn’t compare to the long-lasting qualities of cement board. Cement boards will not fade or warp, and they are engineered with a wood-grain look, so they have a natural look but with much stronger properties and far less maintenance.

If you are ready to replace your home’s siding, and stop maintaining the outside of your home year after year, then call us to learn more about James Hardie siding. We guarantee everything but the weather! Iron River Construction – siding contractors serving the greater Minneapolis area.  952-442-1762

What Makes Good Siding for Your Minneapolis Home?

Minneapolis siding materials seem to be on the surface pretty much all the same. Most people assume that these are held to some sort of standard building code that will be able to stand up to the elements. This is partially true; there is a standard, but within that standard, there is a wide range of differences.

There are several types of siding available, such as aluminum, vinyl, wood, stone and cement board. Of all these types, stone is probably best when it comes to durability and insulating qualities; but few people can afford it. The next best thing would be cement board. This is because it offers the same toughness as stone, while being engineered to fit together like a puzzle. Cement is also extremely fire resistant, unlike vinyl and aluminum. God forbid a fire ever takes place in your home, but if it does, James Hardie siding will be able to stand up to it far better than the other types of siding materials, protecting more of your home by containing the fire until the fire department gets there.

This material is a fiber-cement composite that will resist high winds and impacts better than most other sidings. The wind will slam small objects into the side of our homes whenever it blows; eventually, these will take their toll by leaving dings and dents all over your home. It will also work the siding lose so that the wind can get behind the siding and actually pull it off. You won’t see that with quality cement boards. They are made specifically to stand up to this kind of punishment. Because James Hardie manufactures their siding according to your climate, they even have a tornado “resistant” siding that will hold its own during the most severe winds. While no siding can claim to be tornado ‘proof’; tornado ‘resistant’ siding means that this is the optimal protection that you can get in this current market. Barring a direct hit, cement board siding is your best bet against high winds and flying debris.

While we don’t see much of that here in Minneapolis, James Hardie Siding will have just what you need for your unique climate zone. Give one of our Iron River Construction consultants call to learn more about what we can do for you. 952-442-1762

The Best Qualities in a St Paul Siding Contractor

There are not many, but there are some in our area that have had bad experiences with a local St Paul roofing and siding contractor, and with any luck they will learn from their mistakes.  Hiring someone because they had the cheapest price is rarely the best way to go. You will eventually feel this maneuver sooner or later, but always long after the contractor has left your project.

The most important things to watch out for are;

  1. Are they legally licensed and insured to work on your home?
  2. Have they been in business for at least 5 years?
  3. Can they provide at least 3 references?
  4. Obtain at least 3 written estimates before you decide on one in particular.
  5. Take a look at how they present themselves and their approach to discussing your particular needs and concerns.

If you are not satisfied with each one of the answers to these questions, then you should probably not go with this contractor. Without a license, contractors can turn around and sue you if they, or anyone they bring onsite, gets hurt. Even though it sounds frivolous, it happens every now and then, and the hassle factor alone is simply not worth using an unlicensed contractor in any field.

If they have not been in business for at least 5 years, then you will be running the risk of them not being completely competent at their job. While some will say “I have been roofing since I was 8 years old…” their responsibility on the job may not have been much more than the errand boy.

Providing references is probably the best way to make a determination about a company. Without a track record of their successes, how can you expect anything from them without knowing this first? If they have been in business for any length of time, they will certainly have a few happy customers that are glad to share their experiences.

Make sure you are comparing apples to apples; and oranges to oranges when going over your contracts. There are some who will nickel and dime you to death; and end up charging you more in the long run than if you had simply gone with another slightly higher bid. This is a common problem with contractors. They will come back to the homeowner after the job has started and tell of some ‘unforeseen circumstance’ that is now going to cost a few hundred; or even thousand dollars more. Make sure there is a provision that caps your costs somewhere in the contract.

Lastly, take a good look at how they maintain their materials. Their tools are their livelihood, and should be treated with respect. If they don’t respect their tools; chances are they will not respect the job either. Be smart, take notice, and make sure you call Iron River Construction when you are ready to replace your St. Paul siding. We have been there and done that including many excellent references… you can be sure you will get the best of everything, every time we come over.  952-442-1762

Shingles Aren’t Just for Roofs: Siding Contractor, MN

September 25, 2011 was Minnesota architect Harry Wild Jones’ 152nd birthday. If you aren’t breaking out the cupcakes yet, it might help to know that Jones introduced “Shingle Style” architecture to Minneapolis, and designed landmarks like the Washburn Park Water Tower, Butler Square, and of course his namesake, the Harry W. Jones House of the Tangletown neighborhood in  Minneapolis.

The last demonstrates what he is best known for: his admirable use of shingle coverage. One of his designs, the Minnetonka Yacht Club, with multilevel roof lines that resembled full sails on the water, was said to “possess the same puffy charm of a filling spinnaker sail.” I bet you never thought you’d hear “puffy charm” used to describe a building, did you? (Are you ready for those cupcakes yet?)

This innovative spirit lives on in the development of building materials. Shingles are not only a significant element of design and protection for your roof, but can be a major element of design and protection for the entire exterior of your home. As well as many other leading brands, Iron River Construction offers Certainteed vinyl siding, available in an array of shake and shingle siding, in addition to horizontal and vertical siding.

With vinyl shingle siding, you can create a traditional, stately and authentic appearance, coupled with the durability, environmental sustainability and protection of the latest in building materials. They come with Patented PanelThermometer™ for precise installation, a TrueTexture™ finish that looks like real cedar, and are designed and tested to withstand hurricane force winds, which is especially useful in protecting your home from dangerous wind-borne debris. It’s made of injection molded, durable polymer so you know that it will not attract pests and is built to last. The Molded Perimeter Lock™ helps create a virtually seamless appearance—looks just like real shingles without the labor or maintenance. Also, it never needs painting and comes with a Lifetime limited warranty.

If you are considering replacing your siding, you will be surprised by the wide array of color and styles available today! In addition to Certainteed, Iron River Construction also offers Georgia Pacific, Crane, Owens Corning, Norandex, and James Hardie. Fiber-Cement Siding: the Smart Choice in Minnetonka

For Minnesotans, our primary concern for your home is its ability to withstand freezing temperatures and extreme weather. However, with the siding options available today, functionality doesn’t have to overshadow a home’s aesthetic appeal. With a James Hardie siding system, beauty and function work in perfect congruency with one another.

In light of the increasing frequency of tornadoes and the intense damage they leave in their wake, as Minnesota and Missouri saw on May 22 this year, fiber-cement board, which can withstand wind speeds up to 150 miles per hour, offers a very attractive and protective barrier between your home and the elements. Fiber-cement siding, like that offered by James Hardie, has been specified by hurricane-zone building codes for building homes in hurricane-, tornado-, and wildfire-prone areas “due to its impact resistance against hail and windblown debris,” according to FEMA.

Because fiber cement siding is composed primarily of cement, it combines many of the benefits and safety features of masonry with the look of wood. It will not ignite with exposure to flame or fuel a fire. Because it has qualities like that of stone, brick, and mortar, it is not attractive to pests. Its unique construction also makes it breathable, so it resists moisture and molds.

In addition to the added safety and protection this siding offers, it is maintenance-free. James Hardie features ColorPlus technology, “a unified composition of advanced fiber-cement and baked-on pigment” that is guaranteed for 15 years not to fade, chip, or peel. The color palette was designed with regional preferences in mind, so that you can choose a color that fits your locale, if you so choose. If you are uncertain what color you’d like for your home, they have designed a fun interactive quiz to help you find a color that matches your “personality.” (I can’t guarantee the accuracy of this quiz, however—it kept matching me with “taupe” when I like to think of myself as more of a tangerine…)

When you are ready to replace your siding, the licensed, bonded and insured professionals at Iron River will do it right, will do it to your specifications, and will get it done quickly. Contact us today to find out what Iron River Construction can do for you and your home.

The St Paul Minnesota Siding Business Is Growing this Time of Year

There is a web site titled The Siding Web™ that monitors window and siding data, and has been for several years. They keep track of how many requests are made to purchase products, requests for estimates, what the going rates are in certain geographic areas. They basically give the industry an insight into what the market is doing and where. It is a web page of links- 1 giant link actually.

Recently, they have gotten some more attention because they have declared that the winter recession appears to be moving behind us. According to the Siding Web, there is a marked increase in siding estimates and siding materials being bought this past April 2011, something that is typically seen in January, not this late in the year.

The general belief is that the slow start this year was due to the overall economy of the country, but others are saying the weather also played a large role. Chances are it’s both.  Even when the economy has been slow, and new construction builders slow down, remodelers will pick up, so there has always been a sort of even trade between the two. However, this last slump proved to be outside of the norm.

Nevertheless, even though 2011 has proven to be off to a slow start, it is believed that MN siding installs will progress at a steady rate, and homeowners will continue to give their home the  care it needs to preserve its appearance.

One good way to keep up with maintenance is to contact Iron River Construction, because we can repair your siding in St. Paul, without having to replace it altogether. Sometimes, we all just have to do what we have to do until things turn around. Using an experienced roofing and siding contractor in Minneapolis is one way to make the most of the current situation. 952-442-1762

The Importance Of Siding | Minneapolis St Paul Siding Company

Siding helps protect your house against many different threats including weather, rodents, and pests. There are many different types of siding such as vinyl, metal, and wood. Where you live plays a major role in determining what type of siding is right for you but no matter what type you choose, it will be crucial to protecting your home.

When choosing siding, various types will prevent certain disasters like molding, dust mites, and bacteria. Failure to protect your house from these threats can lead to health problems such as allergic and respiratory problems. If you allow snow, rain, or any other type of moisture to get beyond your siding, your health won’t be your only problem as the moisture will slowly degrade the strength of your entire house.

Pests can be a major problem for homeowners with loose or poor siding~ allowing creatures like dust mites, termites, and carpenter ants to eat away at your home weakening its wooden frame. Be sure to choose a siding you will be able to maintain for a number of years. Wood siding requires much more upkeep and care then vinyl or James Hardie siding which requires minimal maintenance. Siding can increase the value and beauty of any home. Everyone sees the outside so upkeep and care are required to keep your home looking good.

When deciding on what type of siding to install, make sure you choose your siding carefully with the weather and its elements in mind. A carefully chosen siding will not only protect your house but also your families health and safety. If you still find yourself having further questions on siding, give our Minneapolis Siding Company a call,Iron River Construction, at 952-442-1762.
