Vinyl Siding and your Minnesota Home

When it comes to siding, vinyl sidings is considered to be one of the best. This is mainly because almost all of its users are very satisfied with it on their homes. If you are currently thinking of renovating your own home, then it is crucial that you at least consider installing vinyl siding. It used to get a bad rap because early vinyl siding was cheap, and didn’t transition the seasons too well, but all that has changed. Vinyl siding is proven to improve the appeal of your home, as well as perform as well as any other type of siding available. Some of the reasons why it is so popular are;

  1. Affordability.
Vinyl siding is very cost effective. Compared to both stone and wood sidings, vinyl siding is still much less expensive. If you opt to purchase vinyl siding for your home, you will have to choose between low and high quality materials, and it is always advisable to choose higher quality materials. Since vinyl siding is already very cost effective to begin with, selecting anything of low quality might put you in a place you may regret later on.
  2. Durability. Vinyl siding’s durability can now be compared to that similar to aluminum, or cedar shakes. The color is often infused throughout the material, so it won’t fade or blister like other siding
can. Scratches and dings won’t be as obvious as they used to be, and because it’s vinyl, dents will often pop right back out. You won’t find that quality with aluminum or cedar.
  3. Adaptability. Another very good reason that you should consider vinyl siding is that it will fit in with most any design pallet in the neighborhood. When combined with other materials, vinyl will get the job done, without breaking the budget of compromising the style.

Once shunned as cheap and gaudy, vinyl siding has come full circle and joined the other siding materials as a legitimate, viable option for those who want to replace the siding on their home or business. Call Iron River Construction to find out more- 952-442-1762

Shingles Aren’t Just for Roofs: Siding Contractor, MN

September 25, 2011 was Minnesota architect Harry Wild Jones’ 152nd birthday. If you aren’t breaking out the cupcakes yet, it might help to know that Jones introduced “Shingle Style” architecture to Minneapolis, and designed landmarks like the Washburn Park Water Tower, Butler Square, and of course his namesake, the Harry W. Jones House of the Tangletown neighborhood in  Minneapolis.

The last demonstrates what he is best known for: his admirable use of shingle coverage. One of his designs, the Minnetonka Yacht Club, with multilevel roof lines that resembled full sails on the water, was said to “possess the same puffy charm of a filling spinnaker sail.” I bet you never thought you’d hear “puffy charm” used to describe a building, did you? (Are you ready for those cupcakes yet?)

This innovative spirit lives on in the development of building materials. Shingles are not only a significant element of design and protection for your roof, but can be a major element of design and protection for the entire exterior of your home. As well as many other leading brands, Iron River Construction offers Certainteed vinyl siding, available in an array of shake and shingle siding, in addition to horizontal and vertical siding.

Dassel, MN Wind Damage Was More Than Just A Breeze

For those that live in and around Dassel, MN, we felt a taste of what mother nature can do last week when she blew a few shingles off the roof. Many people saw full scale damage to their home, and were surprised to go to work the next day and see trees down.

Wind damage to a home is not to be taken lightly. Any compromise in the roofing or siding will allow wind and water to enter your home, and that starts, it will only get worse. It is not our imagination, there has been an increase in harsh weather over the years, and it starts with the wind. Wind applies direct force on the structure, as well as an upward lift that easily removes shingles, separates flashing, and propels things into the siding that will only damage it.  Assessing this type of damage is best left to those who install these items, as they are able to spot right away when something needs attention. More often than not, your homeowners insurance will pay for these damages, but as the homeowner, you have the right to choose who you want to perform the work.

After a big storm like the one we had last week, insurance adjusters get very busy, and don’t often have the time to do a complete inspection, and many of them don’t know how to do one even if they had the time. They are often people who never worked in the field, and don’t know that while inspecting the shingles, it is important to check the gutters, siding and trusses as well. The upward force applied to a roofing system can be strong enough to actually shift your entire roof, as if it was one piece. If you were never an installer, you may never see this unless you are looking for it.

For this reason, it is important to contact a specialist that understand all the nuances that go into roofing or siding repair. Iron River Construction is just such a company. Our construction specialties are in storm damage in general so we have already been there; and done that, no matter what it is. Call us to have your home checked out for free. 952-442-1762

Roofing, Siding, Storm Repair: Norwood, MN

Happy Stiftungsfest, Norwood! Whether you call home Norwood, Norwood Young America, or just Young America, the month of August is sure to be filled with schnitzel, spätzle, cold brau, fresh Bavarian pretzels, and probably a bratwurst or two in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Founders’ Day. It might be a little hot for lederhosen in August, but if leather shorts are just your thing, don’t let the heat stop you—it’s your time to shine!

I don’t mean to be presumptuous by isolating such activities to just one month out of the year. Privately, your civic pride might be such that you celebrate the founding day of your town year-round. (My brother-in-law is German American and he drinks a big stein of home-brewed lager when he comes home from the lab each day, just as regular as a cuckoo clock.)

There is but a brief window, however, for you to prepare your home for the long winter ahead. In the steaming days of summer, winter is a distant memory to be conveniently summoned should the AC break. Once winter hits, it will continually remind you of its presence. Now is the time to have a professional inspect your roof and siding for storm damage, and to start any roofing projects you’ve been considering.

Hail damage may not always be apparent, so inspecting your roof after a hailstorm is a good idea for a couple important reasons. Insurance claims have a time limit, so claims must be reported immediately. More significantly, if minor damage to your roof or siding is not repaired right away, it will mean even more expensive water damage down the road, at a time unlikely to be convenient.

Whether your home has suffered storm damage, needs some routine maintenance, a siding update, or a total remodeling makeover, Iron River Construction is the reliable choice. We have been here for 15 years, are licensed, bonded and insured, and have what it takes to get the job done right and on time. Contact us for a no-obligation inspection, or a free quote.

The St Paul Minnesota Siding Business Is Growing this Time of Year

There is a web site titled The Siding Web™ that monitors window and siding data, and has been for several years. They keep track of how many requests are made to purchase products, requests for estimates, what the going rates are in certain geographic areas. They basically give the industry an insight into what the market is doing and where. It is a web page of links- 1 giant link actually.

Recently, they have gotten some more attention because they have declared that the winter recession appears to be moving behind us. According to the Siding Web, there is a marked increase in siding estimates and siding materials being bought this past April 2011, something that is typically seen in January, not this late in the year.

The general belief is that the slow start this year was due to the overall economy of the country, but others are saying the weather also played a large role. Chances are it’s both.  Even when the economy has been slow, and new construction builders slow down, remodelers will pick up, so there has always been a sort of even trade between the two. However, this last slump proved to be outside of the norm.

Nevertheless, even though 2011 has proven to be off to a slow start, it is believed that MN siding installs will progress at a steady rate, and homeowners will continue to give their home the  care it needs to preserve its appearance.

One good way to keep up with maintenance is to contact Iron River Construction, because we can repair your siding in St. Paul, without having to replace it altogether. Sometimes, we all just have to do what we have to do until things turn around. Using an experienced roofing and siding contractor in Minneapolis is one way to make the most of the current situation. 952-442-1762
